Precious vs. Semi-precious Gemstones
Precious gemstones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are considered precious since the min-1800’s due to their rarity. All other stones classify as semi-precious gemstones or minerals.
Some jades and opals sold for over $1 million. However, this does not mean that precious gemstones cost more than semi-precious gemstones.
Natural vs. Lab-created Gemstones
Natural stones are created in and mined from the earth. However, sometimes a treatment process, such as heat, enhances the natural stone’s color and/or clarity.
Gemstones created in laboratories look like natural stones and created using the same composition as natural stones. This makes the gemstones more affordable. Examples include opalite, diamonds, bismuth, and rubies. These gemstone types shouldn’t be confused with imitation gemstones made using dyes, paint, foil, glass, and various other materials like Cubic Zirconia.
